Jaguar XJS Fuel Tank Vent Issues - EVERYTHING you need to know to fix! Coupe, Cab, H&E, Conv, etc.
Parts Links and More Details Within! Click to Expand Video Description.
Today we are focusing on the Jaguar XJS Fuel Tank Vent systems. Below you will find any additional or post-video updates, as well as links to parts or tools as applicable.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional Info:
- Note that in the video audio I noted the Hess & Eisenhardt cars used cut down Coupe tanks. However, as I learned more, I realized it was very clear the H&E cars had to start life as built or partial built XJSC (Cabirolet models) - it would be easier to adapt a hood (top) to that design than cut up a coupe. As a result, they probably used cut-down Cabriolet style tanks.
- If you have more info, post a comment, and I will update here as text fits!

FUEL / PCV / Vapor Line Hose: -
Note that you can buy smaller lengths at your local parts store. I buy the spools when possible as you will use these for many other applications and will save in bulk!
Vacuum Source:
Note: I believe I used 5/32 vacuum line which I will link, but also think 3/16 will work fairly universal on this task. It's not bad to pick up an assortment. Also, there are lots of "silicone" vacuum hoses on Amazon, they seem to work fine, but are thicker than rubber line. I'd recommend rubber for this purpose to avoid drilling a larger hole if passing through a bulkhead.

Jaguar XJS Gets a Modern Radio - $75 Single DIN Apple CarPlay / Android Auto! Will it even work?
Переглядів 986Місяць тому
If there's one thing I have learned to dislike, it's flashy modern headunits in classic vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I love a nice stereo/head unit, but often times flashy modern radios look goofy the day they go on market, and worse as they age. Case in point - this 2000's looking cassette deck in this Jag. I tend to gravitate to original or original looking radios. But I do love Android Auto...
Honda CRV Hybrid Engine Oil Change Steps - 2024 l 2023 plus Maintenance Mode!
Переглядів 7 тис.3 місяці тому
On today's video, we go over the steps as we did our first oil and filter change on this 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid that came into the shop. This first oil change was done at 1800 miles to be an eariler than normal change for break-in, even though maintenance minder still showed over 70% oil life. Future changes will be more nominal intervals. This is how we did it. More details, parts, and tool lin...
V12 Jag Essential Fixes - What did a 49k mile Jaguar XJS really need to be safe and reliable?
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 місяці тому
Since we started this project, we had hoped to do a quick set of repairs and maintenance and get this out on the road by Easter Sunday 2024. Well, that came and went and we kept finding more things that needed to be done urgently before driving. From rotted fuel lines, ignition system, fuel tank evap, and brakes, it turned out to be more than expected. While we didn't do a FULL refurb on this, ...
Why we didn't just drive the Jag XJS - What we found so far and updates - Vortex Garage

A quick update video from March 22, 2024 showing some of the work we've done. We also get into a debatable topic which is how deep this work will go - it's spring time, and I'd like to drive this car. I may be doing some of this again to really make the engine bay perfect. For now, I need to try and limit scope to the truly needed things, things that can really harm V12 Jags. Just look at those...

Let's buy an already broken unreliable V12! 1989 Jaguar XJS - Project Intro

Sometimes when opportunity knocks, you end up hauling home a non-running V12 Jaguar. That happened to us in late Fall. What started out as an excursion to help a local Jag owner determine what was wrong with his XJS turned into realization he was looking to sell it. We made a deal, and purchased it non-running. Today we'll do a quick walkaround and intro the project. But already to upload, we h...

    Great video and explanation. I had similar symptoms - shutter on acceleration under load (most evident when going uphill) - but without the P0299 code or noticeable sounds. Same Forscan graphs with the dropouts on boost pressure over 20psi I replaced the BPV without improvement. Replacing the turbo wastegate solenoid solved the problem. It seems that either could be the cause so anyone with this issue might consider replacing both units (as he did,) just to save time and effort.

    Great video. Like you, I always pull the bad switches, relays, whatever apart to see how things work and also to see how they failed. My dad told me decades ago, "you might as well pull the old one apart, it's already broken, it can't get much brokener." Gray Scotch-Brite pads work really well for cleaning contacts like these. Not too coarse. Done this very thing many times over the years. Actually had one switch where the bits of worn copper mixed with the dielectric grease inside the switch into a kind of conductive grease that shorted out the whole switch. I just cleaned out the old grease (never use contact cleaner, just rubbing alcohol on a paper towel), put in new grease and was good to go. Great video. Super useful. Subscribed.

    200k plus? Yes....and ...no. My '04, that I bought new in November of '03 (bone stock by the way) had 217k on it and then a timing chain guide broke, went into the oil pan, then sucked into the pickup tube robbing the motor of oil. Long story short, the motor had to be overhauled. Tough, really tough getting some parts 20 years later. Now just trying to get the coolant crossover tube repaired, which you haven't been able get for years either from Ford or aftermarket. I've been without it since the middle of March. Still waiting to get it back. I sure miss it.

    Great video. For the revised purge system, the charcoal canister should have 2 x valves that connect to the top B bank throttle taps. This is a deliberate design to ensure that the valves open and the system purges when the butterfly opens at certain angles and there is vacuum. If your car is equipped with a purge solenoid, trace the wires, I won’t be surprised if it’s connected in parallel with the supplementary air valve near the bank A airbox.

  • @allanbritcher622
    @allanbritcher622 Місяць тому

    Hi, very good info, thanks. A couple of years ago when I was doing up the engine bay and surrounds, I removed the canister as I was told it was not necessary.. After doing some extra research and some reading of Palms book, I realised that I'd made an unwise decision and accordingly replumbed the canister valve however I placed the Rochester valve on the engine side in lieu of the tank side. To this point in time I have had no problems. Keen to hear your thoughts. KUTGW

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage Місяць тому

      I would say the only issue would be you will vent more vapors into the canister with this setup, which may simply result in some venting out the top of the canister. I doubt it would overwhelm the carbon element within but it will prob get more vapors accumulating. In reality though, how much? The reason I say this is the the valve also does serve as a check valve and only opens when tank pressures go slightly up. With the valve on the engine side that slight restriction between the tank and canister is no longer there meaning vapors will always "meander" in with no check valve. Again though, would this really be an issue? Probably not but it's probably a consideration why it's between the tank and canister, to manage overall vapor flow and also spot fluid in some cases if the tank is highly over filled (though on Jag they do have a vapor separator on the tank which probably makes getting raw fuel into the vent line not something that should happen) Anyway in your config its really acting like a second purge valve - only ever opening when vacuum is applied as the canister has a top vent and this should never really hit the 2psi. I do believe as such there is a reason the Rochester valve is between the tank and canister, and it's prob prudent to put it back that way. But in the meantime the biggest harm I could see would be over saturation of the carbon in the canister and potentially vapor smells from it. But you should have no issues with tank pressures since it's effectively an open vent to the canister. Hope this helps and isnt too disjointed a reply, typing it out on my phone as I think about it 😎. Cheers!

    Sir ,my long 445 tractor steering is turning to the right when I crank it. I just put a new pump on it and have bleed the lines, but still pulls completely to the right. My pump is getting really hot . Do you have any idea were the problems could be. Sincerely

      From what I understand the 445 uses a mechanical steering box at the wheel and a hydraulic power assist. The 460 I have used a fully hydraulic (hydrostatic) steering so it's a bit different. That said, the hydraulic power steering ram should be controlled by a control valve assembly on the side of the tractor. If that is faulty, jammed or even has air it could be causing it to be stuck open feeding the side of the ram that is pushing your steering to the right. This could also be working the pump harder. This thread on Yesterday's Tractor forum may help you out - if not id register there and ask, a good number of experts there. forums.yesterdaystractors.com/threads/long-445-power-steering.1252007/ I do not have familiarity with the 445 steering setup, just know that it's mechanical with hydraulic assist Hope this helps some!

    I have a 91 coupe that needs venting help.

      Hopefully this video sheds some light on where to find the vent system. Being a 1991 it should be post recall and this have the Rochester valve up above the tank, RH side. The Rochester valves can fail so maybe simply need a replacement. Just take care to install with the CAN and TANK sides correct as some valves have them reversed.

    I have 6 jags - but my Series 3 is till my favourite saloon with it's pepper pot wheels - the ride, handling, performance, style and power - very hard to beat it. If you get a well cared for low mileage model, you won't regret it, but stay away from the roughies and the xj40's - they will bite your heart and your wallet.

    I am kind of glad I am watching this. We have a 16 Focus and we have the opposite the low pressure side is 20 psi lower than desired at idle, and it drops dramatically under load. The high pressure is almost exactly equal to desired to actual when looking at the Autel in live data. While I know that it's probably going to have possibly damaged the high pressure pump, but for now I think we might be able to get it sorted with just the in tank pump. We have already tried the low pressure sensor located just before the high pressure pump, fixed it for a year, but we tried replacing it this time with out any luck, it has 148,700 miles. Then if my family is able to get something different to replace it with may be someone else can have the pleasure of doing the high pressure pump when it decides to fail. Those engine belly pans/covers are junk it missing doesn't surprise me. We have a 14 Escape with the 1.6L with less than 75k. Only thing we have done is inner and out tie rods, even though it only had the left inner that was bad we bought a kit with both sides inner and outer. Tires were the only other expense, due to discount tire having an inexperienced tire tech that tried to break the tire off the bead without allowing the tire to deflate enough. That causes the tire machine to tear a whole in the sidewall. So their free flat repairs were very expensive that day.
